Yes — our pans pass any city inspection. It is one of the five questions we are asked most, and it has never been a complicated answer.
What has to be in place before we mop
If any of this is missing, the job cannot be done properly, and it costs everybody a trip.
- Drain set and flushed, and the correct shower drain.
- Blocking around the walls, typically 2x10 or 2x12.
- The curb, dam or threshold in place — minimum two 2x4s, three recommended.
- A solid floor that does not move underfoot.
- On a first-floor slab, the p-trap filled with cement.
- Demolition finished.
The flood test is the evidence
Water goes in the pan and stays there. If it has not leaked within 24 hours, the pan was built correctly. Sometimes we run the test, sometimes the contractor does once the pan has dried.
It is the only part of the process that proves anything, which is why nobody should tile before it happens.
Permits
We do not pull permits. On the jobs we work, the general contractor handles that.
Where we will not proceed
If a shower is not prepped to the standard a proper pan needs, we cannot promise it will be fully waterproof, and we say so before we start rather than after. If a contractor wants it done anyway, we will do it — without a guarantee.
